What is group therapy?
Therapy groups are different from support groups in that they are
led by professionals and often deal with issues on a deeper level.
One or two psychotherapists usually lead a group of 6-10 clients.
Some groups are theme-oriented (e.g., anger management) and others
are more general therapy groups. Regardless, the therapist
helps to promote a safe and confidential environment where members
can open up about their deepest thoughts and feelings. The support
and honest feedback from group members can be extremely helpful.
If there are clashes between members, they are given guidance and
encouragement to work through their differences in a healthy
manner. This process usually creates growth in relationships
outside the group. Group therapy is a very powerful mode of
therapy that can have a tremendous impact on self-esteem,
interpersonal growth and problem resolution.
